PERINATAL HEALTHCARE EQUITY RESOURCES

Project Director, Rachel Hardeman, PhD, MPH

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Diversity Science and project director, Rachel Hardeman, PhD, MPH, will create interactive e-learning modules for perinatal providers focused on implicit bias and reproductive justice.

The course will align with the training requirements outlined in the California Dignity in Pregnancy and Childbirth Act (Senate Bill 464) which went into effect in January 2020.

The e-learning modules and resources developed for this project will be available free of charge. This project was funded by the California Health Care Foundation in response to strong evidence of racial inequalities in perinatal care and outcomes.

PRELIMINARY FAQ

Get answers to common questions

What resources will be available?

Two types of resources will be available through this project:

      1. Online e-Learning Modules: We are developing an implicit bias e-Learning course for perinatal providers that will cover all of the learning requirements for an evidence-based implicit bias program (Section 123630.6) of California Senate Bill 464. This course will be approximately 60 minutes in length and composed of a series of short modules (10-25 minutes each) on specific topics related to providing equally high quality and culturally appropriate care in perinatal settings.
      2. Downloadable print resources for organizational leaders.

How will these materials be made available?

All materials will be downloadable (for free) from the Diversity Science Equal Perinatal Care webpage (this webpage).

The e-Learning modules will be provided in SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model) and xAPI formats. These are distribution-ready formats for Learning Management Systems. Resources for organizational leaders and internal trainers and change agents will be provided in PDF format.

How can individuals complete the e-Learning? How can organizations provide e-Learning to their staff?

Individuals and organizations will be able to download the e-Learning modules for free in SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model) and xAPI formats. In order to access the content and track learner progress per the requirement of SB 464 for facilities to certify completion of the training, organizations will need to use a Learning Management System (LMS). Organizations can either:

  • Provide the e-Learning modules to their employees through their existing LMS.
  • Utilize a third-party LMS, such as the diversityscienceacademy.org learning platform. We anticipate a nominal fee to cover our administration costs in tracking participation and issuing certificates of completion.

How will stakeholders be included?

We are committed to the full inclusion of all interested stakeholders and perspectives and have developed a comprehensive stakeholder engagement plan.
Rather than use traditional approaches for stakeholder engagement that include some but exclude others, we will provide open access to all interested stakeholders to review objectives and content and provide either public or private feedback. The more common approach (e.g., advisory groups) inevitably limits inclusion. This approach encourages any individual or group that self-identifies as having a stake in this project to have an opportunity for participation.

In late spring 2020, the eLearning Plan was posted on this website. The drafts included the learning objectives and educational approaches (methods and type of content) for achieving the objectives. Stakeholders had the opportunity to provide feedback either publicly (so other stakeholders viewing the website will see it) or privately (to Dr. Hardeman and team).

When will these resources be available?

We are very aware that SB 464 is already in effect (as of Jan. 1, 2020). We will be developing the e-Learning training experiences in modules that will be released as they are completed so that organizations can start meeting the requirement for SB 464 as quickly as possible. The first e-Learning module will be released soon and the remainder will follow in close succession. All resources are expected to be completed and available by or before February 2021.

How much time will the e-Learning training modules take?

The entire foundational e-Learning experience will take around 60 minutes.

Following best practices, the 60 minutes will be broken up into several shorter modules 10-25 minutes each. A 60-minute training is insufficient, on its own, to overcome systemic racial inequalities. These e-Learning modules are understood to be a starting point from which deeper organizational and systems change can build. As with all our learning experiences, we will focus on strategies to inspire motivation for and interest in deeper learning and change.

How can I access the SB464 e-learning?

There are two ways to access the e-learning:

  1. Watch the courses at Diversity Science Academy
  2. Load the course files onto your learning management system (LMS)

Prior to accessing these resources, you must complete the registration form.

What versions will the course files be available in?

We will provide the course files in SCORM 2004 and SCORM 2.1.
Diversity Science is unable to provide technical support for loading the courses onto your LMS. Please refer to your organization’s learning and development team for technical support in operationalizing the course on your LMS.

When will the entire e-learning course be available?

Diversity Science will release all sections of the course by January 2021. The exact timing of each section’s release will be publicized through our mailing list.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

The Eliminating Inequities in Perinatal Health Care Project is focused on implicit bias and reproductive justice in pregnancy and childbirth. The project will provide free educational e-learning modules and resources on implicit bias and reproductive justice to eliminate inequities in perinatal health outcomes. This work is led by Rachel Hardeman, PhD, MPH, and Diversity Science, and is funded by the California Health Care Foundation in response to strong evidence of racial inequalities in perinatal care and outcomes.
